Why Are We Here?

March 1st, 2015

What is the purpose of the church, why do we exist?

Preached March 1, 2015.

Joshua 24:1-18
Matthew 28:16-20

ANd here are the responses I got expressing the purpose of the church in 140 characters:

  • Make disciples of Jesus so we can share in God's mission to heal the world.

  • Calvin says that church leaders should be faithful interpreters of the Law, and shall study to assert its entire teaching.

  • develop apprentices of Jesus and equip and release them to join in Gods mission

  • Ekklesia: a particular and universal community, broken and fragmented, yet called together by God and before God to be holy and whole.

  • Provide a safe community of believers to support journeys of faith.

  • Worship God, Proclaim the gospel, administer the sacraments, care for those in need. Promote moral righteousness and social justice. (130 characters)

  • To proclaim Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope, and to live together guided by His Holy Spirit.

  • To help people to enter into and deepen their relationship with God in Christ, with their neighbour, and with themselves.(123 characters! Woo hoo!)

  • A community of people who through God, practice Agape and Shalom.

  • to proclaim what God has done/is doing in the world, to join God in Kingdom work, to invite others along for the ride

  • Helping us to Love and help one another as Jesus did. As our creed States "We are not alone"

  • a place of worship for the community in the community

  • to have fellowship one with another; to know Jesus Christ, and to make Him known.

  • Developing disciples and a community of disciples for loving God and God's creation, our neighbours and ourselves into fulfillment in all our relations.

  • To learn, practice, and experience The Way.

  • God is love

  • Sharing Gods love; embracing faith

  • To love God, to love people and to serve all.

  • Make a life giving difference

  • At our table with God all are welcome.

  • To point people toward Jesus.

  • To be a hothouse of love - loving God, loving people, loving one another - sensing and savouring God's Presence in everything and everyone.

  • To provide a place to worship, grow and serve where you can talk instead of sending out bursts of 140 characters.

  • A wise person once said “Seek justice, do kindness and walk humbly with our God.” It is still a pretty good mission statement.

  • To comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable?

  • To worship God through Jesus Christ and to continue Christ's ministry in the world.

  • To share the good news of God's unconditional love for the world as we learned it in Jesus of Nazareth. (how many is that?)

  • To gather as a community of faith to support each other's journey of faith. To sing. To pray. To meditate. (slight variation of my other post)

  • The church community nurtures, sustains, and challenges us to do what does our God require of us,.. to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with our God. JUST DO IT!

  • To be a demonstration plot for a different kind of Kingdom.
